Congratulations.
You have stumbled upon the world’s only linguistic farming experiment.
Languages are constantly evolving, with old words dying out and new ones emerging every single day. We all know that. But how does it happen? Can you influence it? Is it possible to get your own word into the dictionary? Well, here at Verbal Gardening, new words are being secretly grown in an attempt to infiltrate the English language with a new crop of verbal concepts. It’s exciting. It may not work. But it might.
If you click here, you will find ten Verbal Seeds. These are recently invented, entirely original words, phrases and ideas. They have been planted here and elsewhere and are currently being nurtured to maximise growth and future flowering.
That’s where you can help.
As well as being buried in the internet, some seeds are being dispersed around the world and planted in as many locations as possible. Please feel free to pick up a handful and scatter them as far and as wide as possible. Treat them with love and affection and they could flourish. All you need do is choose an idea that you like, use it whenever you can, and with a little bit of luck, it may just blossom into a fully-formed saying. You might even be inspired to grow your own. In fact you might just have spread some wild seeds without realising it. Have a little think.
If you want to get involved, everything you need to know is on this simple site. If you think you’ve chanced upon one of these seeds bravely poking a tiny bud out of the ground then do get in touch (farmer@verbalgardening.com). And if you think you’ve created your own verbal crop, we would also love to hear from you. A committee of Ten Rare Men is on hand right now to research and confirm any sighting or claim. It’s fun.
